Practical Visual Effects

My most recent film collaboration is As Above...So Below, created by composers William Hesselink and Vid Cousins for their collective Dark Sky Society. I contributed cinematography, dark-field microscopy, and chemical macrophotography in collaboration with filmmakers David Barlow-Krelina, Cielle Graham, and Corinne Merrell. The large-scale live performance and accompanying film will premiere in early 2027.
I am also working on two feature films currently in development creating analog VFX sequences for director Yannick Jamey's Born Underground and custom art objects for director Sonia Oleniac, who is currently developing her first feature Trumpet, a film adaptation of The Hearing Trumpet by Leonora Carrington.
As a director I created the experimental film Preservation in collaboration with drummer and composer Tommy Crane. The work premiered with a live performance of the score at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center in New York in 2017 and expanded into a video installation accompanied by a limited-edition vinyl and an artist book release in 2019.
I create tactile, experimental visual effects through a combination of practical techniques, analogue processes, and digital compositiang.
Working between the physical and the digital, I develop custom in-camera effects, optical experiments, and material-based processes to create immersive moving images. My approach explores the unpredictability of real-world materials, using experimentation and hands-on fabrication to produce visuals that feel organic, atmospheric, and cinematic.
Techniques include custom optical filters and prisms, liquid and fluid dynamics, cymatics, chemical reactions, ink and pigment diffusion in water, ferrofluids, sand animation, and other practical effects. I often use macro lenses and microscopy to reveal intricate textures, abstract landscapes, and natural phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye.

For the film project, As Above…So Below I created custom camera filters in collaboration with Orbita Futura to create light effects that look like the universe, with laser cut designs in in Black gloss cast acrylic.
