Quiet River of Dust is two volumes of music by Richard Reed Parry. Each volume represents one side of a river, two distinct worlds that are both connected. To bring these worlds to life, Maurice developed a series of miniature landscapes, combining physical model-making, photography, painting, and digital collage. Working with Vermont-based topographical model company Landfoam, she translated real-world terrain selected in Google Earth into CNC-milled landscape models, which became the foundations for two imagined environments.
Vol. 1 evokes an enchanted Japanese forest in summer. Maurice constructed and photographed a miniature landscape against hand-painted watercolour backdrops, experimenting with lighting to create an atmospheric, dreamlike setting.Drawing inspiration from the seasons, and Parry's refrencse to Japanese poetry, the folk music of the British Isles and archival photographsf and VHS videos. She encapsulated some of these elements in 3D bubbles, alluding to floating memories and communication between the living and the spirit world.
Vol. 2 explores a more introspective landscape, shaped by memory, the unconscious, and the transition from summer to winter. Maurice transformed a second miniature terrain model through the slow growth of salt crystals across its surface, creating formations resembling ice and snow. The resulting environment evokes a submerged, mysterious world where natural processes become part of the image-making itself.
Both miniature landscapes were later incorporated into a 360° immersive live performance at the Society for Arts and Technology (SAT) in Montréal, extending the album's visual worlds beyond the printed artwork into an enveloping audiovisual experience.
